Happ won 12 games in 23 starts, and had an ERA under 3.0 for the Phillies in the 2009 season.

Earlier in the season, Happ was mentioned in trade rumors when the Phillies were looking for a starting pitcher. The Blue Jays wanted Happ, but the Phillies took the lefty out of the mix and any possible trade for Toronto's Roy Halliday fell apart.

The pursuit for a starting pitcher eventually brought Cliff Lee to the Phillies from the Cleveland Indians.

The Chicago White Sox third baseman Gordon Beckham was voted Sporting News Rookie of the Year for the American League.
