Officer discharges weapon after other struck by car

WEST PHILADELPHIA - November 7, 2009

The incident occurred at around noon Saturday when two officers in a police vehicle noticed a silver Mercury making an illegal and unsafe turn onto Haverford Avenue. They followed the car and determined the vehicle was stolen.

When the driver of the stole vehicle backed into the rear of a house on the 1400 block of 75th Street, the officers approached the car on foot. The driver then veered towards the officers and struck one.

The other officer then discharged his weapon, striking the vehicle, but not the suspect inside.

The officer that was struck by the stolen car reported he was lightly tapped and was not injured.

The driver did get away from the officers, however, was soon apprehended on the 1300 block of Farrington Street.

Police have one male in custody and continue to investigate the incident.
