Wounded K9 recovering after surgery

BRANDYWINE HUNDRED, Del. - November 12, 2009

The dog, Diablo, got a visit Thursday from his handler and other canine officers.

A police spokesperson says even though he was heavily medicated, as soon as his handler and the other officers entered tor room Diablo perked up and wagged his tail.

His energy level went up, the spokesperson said, and it was obvious Diablo recognized his visitors and was happy to see them.

The man who, police say, shot Diablo was himself shot by police.

Eric Weit is still under police guard at a hospital. Police expect to charge him with assault, weapons possession and reckless endangering charges, but he has not been arraigned.

Diablo is expected to stay in intensive care unit at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital for a couple of days. Doctors tell police his prognosis for recovery is good.

Police say officers shot Weit several times after he shot Diablo and fired at officers.
