Woman burned, beaten with shovel, strangled

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - November 14, 2009

Police say screams were reported at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday in a home in the Somerton section of the city and officers found 42-year-old Shakuntla Guru in the living room. Police spokesman Sgt. Ray Evers says she had apparently been choked and beaten with a shovel, and there were burns on her arms and face. She was pronounced dead an hour later.

Evers says her 53-year-old husband, Ashok Kumor Guru, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder.

Jeff Moran, spokesman for the Medical Examiner's Office, says the cause of death was strangulation.

A listed number for Guru did not allow a message to be left and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.
