New coats for students

STRAWBERRY MANSION - November 17, 2009 400 students at Richard Wright Elementary School got the royal treatment Tuesday. Volunteers helped each girl and boy pick out a brand new winter coat. For many little ones it seemed too good to be true!

"All of the old ones at my house my mom has to keep washing, they're all old. Now I have a brand new one," said Iyannah Butler.

It's all a part of the "Keeping Kids Warm Program" supported by Bensalem-based Charming Shoppes Inc. which includes Lane Bryant and Fashion Bug stores.

"Every child deserves a brand new coat that's picked out for them and by them and that's not a hand-me-down, that's what's exciting about it," explained Robin Taylor Plimpton, Lane Bryant district manager.

Principal Anita Duke says many of her students simply can't afford the luxury of a new coat.

"We have some parents who are working two jobs and struggling to provide for their children and this is a blessing."

The program is giving away 10,000 coats nationwide to keep kids warm but also to let them know that someone cares.
