Strike averted at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center

POTTSTOWN, Pa. (AP) - December 2, 2009

Health care workers voted Tuesday by a 93 percent majority to ratify a new three-year contract with hospital owner Community Health Systems.

The settlement comes after two contract extensions and averts a strike deadline that was scheduled for 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The new contract covers 267 workers including licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, technicians, technologists, clerical workers and maintenance employees.

The Service Employees International Union says the contract is good news for workers and the patients they serve.

Hospital chief John Kirby says he's pleased that a contract was reached that both sides liked.
