3 people discovered at AC pier, 1 dead

ATLANTIC CITY - December 5, 2009

Authorities discovered a man's body while responding to a fire at the Central Pier on the Atlantic City Boardwalk Saturday evening, Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel stated.

Investigators have not yet determined the man's identity.

Atlantic County Medical Examiner Dr. Hydow Park will perform an autopsy Sunday to determine the cause of death. Evidence in the case is that the man's death may be unrelated to this fire, Prosecutor Housel said.

Two other people were discovered under the pier. They were transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus. One was treated and released and the other is being treated for smoke inhalation. Their names are not being released at this time.

The fire may have been caused by homeless people seeking warmth, Prosecutor Housel stated.

Atlantic City fire and police personnel responded to the fire, which started at approximately 5 p.m. The Central Pier is located at Tennessee Avenue and the Boardwalk.

The pier was the scene of another fire that destroyed numerous businesses two weeks ago.

The Atlantic County Prosecutors Office is investigating.
