Fifty-two-year-old Leonard Manhart, of Canadensis, was convicted Tuesday of 12 counts of animal cruelty. Investigators say he allowed the livestock to roam free on his 40-acre property in the Pocono Mountains without proper food or shelter.

Animal rescue workers say most of the cows were emaciated when the farm was raided in August. Rescuers found two of the animals inside a house that showed signs of human occupation, including a running computer. The cows have since recovered and two have given birth.

Defense attorney Michael Ventrella says he plans to appeal.

Charges against Manhart's business partner were dismissed.
