Officials at the South River Middle School contacted police, and students were evacuated to nearby South River High School Friday afternoon while police searched the building.
A spokesman for the police department in the community of 15,000 about 10 miles southeast of New Brunswick said the students were not in danger and that the shutdown was precautionary.
The search was ongoing Friday afternoon, and it was not immediately clear whether any bullets were actually found.
