Questions arise in deadly pedestrian crash

NEWARK, Del. - January 2, 2010

The crash occurred early Saturday morning when a 26-year-old male and two passengers were driving in a vehicle northbound on I-95 north of RT 896 when it became disabled.

After the car became disabled the trio walked north and successfully crossed the northbound lanes. When the 26-year-old attempted to cross the southbound lanes he was struck by a 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe which was operated by Marcus A. Burch, 26, of Wilmington.

The 26-year-old pedestrian sustained extensive head, chest and extremity injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers believe that the pedestrian and the two other individuals were involved in a robbery on South Chapel Street prior to the vehicle becoming disabled.

Burch was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Alcohol is suspected on the part of the pedestrian, according to police.
