Heroic efforts in mulit-alarm Trenton fire

TRENTON - January 2, 2010

The fire was first reported around 12:30 a.m. When the first fire crews from nearby Engine 6 arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming from one of the homes and two people standing on the roof screaming for help.

Firefighters quickly struck a second then a third alarm as the fast moving fire spread to adjoining homes. Crews used ladders to rescue the two people off of the roof while other firefighters battled the intense flames in the freezing cold.

Firefighters and neighbors credit a neighbor, Alex Lora, with rescuing an elderly female from inside one of the homes.

The man tells Action News that he smelled smoke and went to investigate and discovered the fire. Using a trashcan, Lora broke into the elderly woman's home and brought her out the door to safety.

The Director of Public safety tells Action News that four homes were damaged by the fire leaving at least three people homeless.

One firefighter was treated for a minor injury.

The fire was placed under control around 2:30 a.m.

There is no word yet on a cause.
