"I came out my door and saw smoke. I could barely see anything … I saw smoke and ran down the steps," said Averyel Sawyer.
Sawyer lives across the hall from the 3rd floor unit where the fire started; he didn't have time to grab any of his belongings not even a pair of socks.
"I shed a couple of tears tonight because I don't have any certainty about tomorrow. I don't know where I'm going to sleep tonight. I'm wearing what I got on."
"A resident in 241 initially came home from wherever he was opened up his door and saw smoke and fire , closed the door, called 911 and started to evacuate the building," said Voorhees Fire Department Chief Jim Pacifico.
Officials say the fire displaced 15 people and damaged two dozen units.
Warren Bonin is among those without a home.
"The other building was a horrendous inferno like something you'd see in a movie, couldn't believe it."
Bonin says this is the second fire at the complex in just the past few months. This time he was prepared.
"I had to get in to get some medicine out and I had suitcase packed which I always keep."
He'll stay with his son in Philadelphia Monday night. The Red Cross is helping others find shelter. They'll likely be put up in other vacant units for the long haul.
"I'm getting ready to go and get some hot chocolate and look for some socks."
This fire could have done much more damage but firefighters say the building had firewalls that prevented it from spreading.
And all the residents with whom we spoke say they have rental insurance because the complex requires it.
