Guilty pleas expected in Pa. corruption scandal

HARRISBURG, Pa. - January 10, 2010

The chief of staff for former House Minority Leader H. William DeWeese and the former caucus personnel director are among the seven people expected to plead guilty Wednesday in Dauphin County Court.

State Attorney General Tom Corbett says they were part of a scheme in which $1.3 million in public funds were used to reward Democrat staffers with secret bonuses for helping with hotly-contested House campaigns.

Former state Rep. Mike Veon and three former Democratic aides are scheduled to go to trial later this month. The seven defendants expected to plead guilty Wednesday are on a list of witnesses prosecutors have provided to the court.
