Arraignment delayed for suspect in cop killing

GEORGETOWN, Del. - January 8, 2010

Department of Corrections spokesman John Painter says Derrick Powell of Cumberland, Md., was one of 11 inmates traveling from Vaughn Correctional Center to the Sussex County Courthouse Thursday morning when their van rear-ended a car at a Milford stoplight.

Powell, who is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Patrolman Chad Spicer, asked to be examined by a doctor and was taken back to the correctional center. The other inmates declined medical attention.

State Attorney General's Office spokeswoman Kerry Angell says Powell's arraignment was rescheduled for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
