Save on your weekly trip to the grocery store

January 11, 2010

Five quick tips to help you save at the supermarket this week.

These are compliments of Consumer Reports Shop Smart magazine. 1. Pick up a bag instead of buying by the pound.
Shop Smart found that a 5-pound sack of potatoes was $2.99 at the grocery store, while loose ones were just 99-cents a pound! 2. Instead of buying fresh veggies, try frozen produce.
They're cheaper and as good or sometimes better than fresh because they're picked and processed at their peak. Plus, you can store them for up to a year. 3. Instead of pricey sea salt, buy less expensive, but just as good kosher salt.
4. If a recipe calls for just a little bit of buttermilk, substitute fresh milk soured with a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar.
5. Replace white wine with dry white vermouth. It's cheaper and stays good longer.
