Wilmington police involved in shootout

WILMINGTON, Del. - January 13, 2010

Authorities say the two officers, one a five year veteran and one who has been on the force for 17 months, were on patrol in the 1500 block of West 5th Street around 10:00 p.m. when they saw a man firing a handgun.

The officers confronted that man, identified as 38-year-old Phillip Purnell.

Police say Purnell then fired at them. The officers fired back, leading to what the police department calls a gun battle.

Once the shooting stopped, Purnell was arrested. Police say neither he, nor the officers, were hurt.

Purnell has been charged with two counts of Attempted Murder, three counts of Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony and one count of Possession of a Deadly Weapon by Person Prohibited.

Bail has been set at $685,000.

Both officers have been placed on Administrative Duty pending an investigation.

Wilmington Police Detectives are asking anyone who might have witnessed the incident to contact Wilmington Police Detectives at 302-576-3620.
