Police tie shoe thief to multiple burglaries

NEWARK, Del. (AP) - January 8, 2010

Police say all of the break-ins happened during times that University of Delaware students were out of classes for Christmas, Thanksgiving, spring or summer breaks.

There were 7 cases in 2006, 9 cases in 2007, 3 cases in 2008 and 9 cases in 2009, with the the remaining two happening between the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010.

Police say until the end of this year there was no other time in which such a large number of the incidents occurred in such a short period of time.

The cases that happened over the recent University of Delaware's Christmas break have brought the total to 50 pairs of footwear in five burglaries.

Since last week, police have started to link earlier cases that are similar; one of those was in November of 2009 during the University of Delaware's Thanksgiving break. 8 pairs of shoes, four large fraternity composite photos and 15 pairs of boxer shorts were stolen from the Kappa Sigma fraternity house on Academy Street between November 24th and the 28th.

The investigation is continuing.
