Using coupons to help Haiti

January 15, 2010

Several years ago, Joyce House won a cruise to Haiti. So, when she heard about the earthquake there, she was especially anxious to help.

"My thing was, I don't have a lot of cash and I keep hearing the donations that they want cash money; well, I figured what us who don't have the money, so I figured I'd take the coupons and give them things I know they needed," Joyce said.

Joyce calls herself a coupon diva. Every week, she clips coupons from dozens of circulars and stocks up on items she can get for free.

"So I gathered all my coupons together and I have so many other items in my house I got for free," Joyce said.

She's spent the past couple of days gathering up toiletries, like toothpaste, toothbrushes, and hand sanitizers, along with other necessities like toilet paper and even nonperishable foods, like pasta, rice and beans.

In all, the supplies would retail for hundreds of dollars, but Joyce got them for free and is now happy to give them away to people who truly need all the help they can get.

"It's for the professional nurses and groups who are going to send a plane down and they're telling people bring stuff to their drop sites," Joyce said.

Joyce is hoping others will follow her example.

"A lot of people right now whose money is tight can take the coupons and still donate," Joyce said.
