Gas explosion wrecks Edison business

EDISON, N.J. - January 18, 2010

Police say the explosion happened shortly after 4:30 a.m. Monday, about an hour after a motorist alerted authorities to a roadway collapse and odor of gas on Route 27 in the central New Jersey community.

Utility crews were investigating and were in the process of evacuating nearby residents when the explosion occurred.

There are no reports of injuries.

PSE&G spokeswoman Bonnie Sheppard says repairs to the gas main are continuing and a nine-block stretch of Route 27 remains closed.

Sheppard says the damaged structure was a Cape Cod-style home used commercially.

Police say some residents have returned to their homes.
