Final phase of 202 bypass set to begin

MONTGOMERYVILLE, Pa. - January 18, 2010

It's a nine mile stretch of road from Route 309 in Montgomeryville to Route 611 in Doylestown.

For at least 15 years residents battle the project, fearing increased pollution. Now some people, like the parents of Jason Marino, find heavy equipment parked just a few feet from their homes.

"There's nothing we can do at this point but move," Marino said. "No one wants a road in the back yard."

In the 1990's the plan was to build a full-fledge high-speed expressway to reduce congestion on local roads. But community opposition and escalating costs prompted a scaling back. The compromise was a 40 mph, landscaped parkway, much of it only two lanes wide.

"We have two lanes, one in each direction. You're going to have five foot shoulders on either side for bicyclists or break down areas," said Gene Blaum of PennDOT.

There will also be a 12 foot wide trail for bicyclists, in-line skaters, and runners who are either commuting or exercising.

Kathy Brown looks over the open space near her house that will soon be part of the scaled back bypass. She hopes the promised trees and earthen berms will screen the sights and sounds of traffic from her home.

"I can't say we are happy it will be here, but it's better than the initial plan," Brown said.

The Route 202 bypass is expected to be completed by late 2011. The cost will likely be about $200 million, or less than half the cost of the original expressway plan.
