Wife, 80, sentenced for abusing husband

WILMINGTON, Del. - January 20, 2010

Shirley Wilson was ordered Tuesday to surrender legal guardianship of her husband, Don, to her daughter or the state as a condition of the suspension of her prison time. She was charged after police found Don Wilson in the office of the family's junkyard business covered in bedsores, malnourished and suffering from dementia.

According to testimony at her trial, Shirley Wilson pulled her stroke-victim husband out of a nursing home, refused in-home care and lived with him in squalor in the junkyard office. Shirley Wilson, who represented herself at trial, denied her husband had any mental problems and said he needed "to come back home and get to work."
