New cemetery opens for veterans

UPPER MAKEFIELD TWP., Pa. - January 20, 2010

The first burials of seven veterans at the Washington's Crossing Veteran's Cemetery were subdued, but glorious. It took 5 years of political and business wrangling to land the 205 acres of prime rural real estate just a few miles from Washington Crossing historic park.

For the family of World War II veteran John Greeley, who passed away in 1996, it is a dream come true.

"He served in the 82nd airborne during World War II and it was the best experience in his life," daughter Doris Greeley said.

"It's incredibly special because for the longest time, we had his ashes, my mother didn't want to part," daughter Diane Greeley said.

The cemetery will date some 200,000 gravesites. Its life expectancy is 105 years as that is how long it is expected it will take before the site reaches capacity.

Marine Lt. Jason Lere buried his grandfather's remains in the new veteran's cemetery as he prepares to head out of Afghanistan.

The first casket will be buried Wednesday. 300 cremated remains are now waiting to be buried at Washington's Crossing. It is open for veterans and families from any part of the country.
