The funeral procession carrying the body of Corporal Christopher Milito arrived at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul around 6:00 a.m. on Thursday.
Cardinal Justin Rigali then presided over a mass at 11:00 a.m. The procession then took Cpl. Milito's body to his final resting place in Marple Township, Delaware County.
As is the custom with officers who have died in the line of duty, police from scores of departments came to pay their respects.
"It's not just for the law enforcement community but also for the officer's family. Just to let them know that, whatever they need, we're here for," said Lt. Jim Connor of the Washington Township Police.
Cpl. Milito was struck and killed by a car early Saturday morning while he was assisting with a traffic accident in the eastbound lanes of the Walt Whitman Bridge.
The 40-year-old from Media, Pa. was nearing his 16th anniversary with the Delaware River Port Authority.
"Although cut short by a seemingly untimely death, the life of Corporal Milito offers us a revered legacy of goodness in our community," said Cardinal Justin Rigali.
The final goodbye for Corporal Milito began on Wednesday night with a viewing in Broomall, Pa.
Cpl. Milito was raised by a single mother in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia, one of five children. He was attending graduate school for criminal justice at West Chester University. He was a highly respected and decorated member of the DRPA's 150 member force.
This is the first time the DRPA lost an officer in the line of duty since 1974.
