Pa. mortuary can send embalming fluid down drain

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) - January 21, 2010

William Harris has been banned from doing so at his self-named business since it opened in Richland Township, near Johnstown, in 1992.

When the funeral home opened, township officials were concerned that the embalming fluid would backwash into neighboring homes because its storm and sewage lines were antiquated and overflowed during heavy rains. As a result, Harris had to embalm bodies at another facility in a neighboring township, then transport them back for viewing.

The township agreed to end the ban after a hearing Tuesday at which officials determined the sewage problems have been resolved by sewer upgrades.
