Woman shot in crossfire, suspect sought

CHESTER, Pa. - January 24, 2010

It happened late Saturday afternoon on 7th Street in Chester, Delaware County.

Police say 64-year-old Andrea Lee, a grandmother and retired social security worker, parked her new car Saturday afternoon just a few steps from her door. This is where she was shot in the back.

Her daughter, Tamara, tells Action News her mom had the presence of mind to grab her cell phone.

"She called 911 herself," Tamara Lee said.

Andrea was rushed to Crozer-Chester Medical Center. Doctors there are worried about the damage done by the bullet.

"She is still in serious condition, [they are worried] about her spinal cord," Tamara said.

Last November, an errant gunshot from outside killed Kathy Ann Stewart while she was on the phone inside a Chester house.

Police think Lee was cut down by a shot from a group of young men trying to stop a car a half block away.

Neighbor John Daniels, a retired sheriff's deputy, says too many kids just don't care.

"About shooting at random, trying to hit whomever they're trying shoot at, never mind who's in the way," Daniels said.

Lee is a family friend of State Representative Thaddeus Kirkland, a pastor at Community Baptist Church. Kirkland says his town has to do something about the senseless violence.

"The men in this community have got to stand up. You can't police your way out of something like this. It takes all the men standing up and even mentoring these young men," State Representative Kirkland said.

Chester police have identified a suspect. An arrest warrant for attempted homicide has been issued for 18-year-old Corey Cooper of Chester. Police say he is armed and dangerous.

"We are actively looking for him and we hope he turns himself in if possible," Chief Floyd Lewis of Chester Police said.
