NJ school damaged in storm to open Wednesday

WASHINGTON TWP., N.J. - January 26, 2010

Part of the roof was torn off the 9-10 building of the Washington Township High School around 11:40 a.m. Monday.

Investigators believe the damage was caused by straight-line winds that hit the roof. They say the winds caused the roof to fold in and collapse on itself, sending debris everywhere.

Water then started pouring into the school. Nine classrooms were affected, and students who use those classes will be sent to others while the damage is repaired.

School officials are hoping there will be just minor inconveniences.

"They're wiping every single thing down, they're checking every locker, we have huge fans, exhaust systems, dehumidifiers... So we will definitely open tomorrow!" said Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Simone.

Workers were up on the school Tuesday checking out the damage.

Some 2,800 students were dismissed early Monday by order of the fire marshal.

No one was hurt.
