Ambulance crashes rushing to fire at parents' home

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - January 28, 2010

Police say Joseph Sims Jr. took an ambulance from the Middle Township Ambulance Corps building after the 911 call Tuesday. Police say he had the emergency lights and siren on when the ambulance struck an SUV.

The driver was airlifted to a hospital in serious condition. Alyn Toth's condition was upgraded to stable by Wednesday.

Authorities say the fire started in the kitchen of the Lower Township home of Sims' parents and an explosive flashover claimed the life of Sims' 85-year-old father.

His mother was rescued from the fire. Relatives say she was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Police are still investigating the crash.
