Drexel U. launches scholarship program

PHILADELPHIA - January 28, 2010

Drexel's program is an ambitious one. The university launched today Drexel Liberty Scholars - a $28 million program.

The scholarship program will offer 50 full-tuition scholarships per year, for the next 5 years. To the 2009/2010 graduates of all Philadelphia high schools, whether they are public, private, catholic, charter or prep schools.

Elected officials and administrators praised the university at today's luncheon.

The 250 scholarships will be provided to city students who are academically-talented and who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford it.

Mayor Nutter sent his congratulations via video. In it he said, "I look forward to coming to campus this fall to meet the first group of scholars."

Classes for the new Liberty Scholars begin in the fall of 2010. Mayor Nutter today challenged other colleges and universities to follow Drexel's lead.
