Philadelphia Auto Show: Going green

PHILADELPHIA - January 29, 2010

In many ways, this year's Philadelphia International Auto Show looks similar to years past. Caterers are setting up for tonight's Black Tie Tailgate party, while detailers shine up the displays.

You can find Mercedes and Lexuses in the train shed and Rolls Royces and Lamborghini's in the ballroom.

But - despite last year's cash for clunkers program -- the auto industry is hurting.

While in years past, manufacturers touted their big trucks or their fancy sports cars, this year it's fuel-efficient, economical cars that are taking center stage.

Troubled Toyota's pushing the Corolla and Yaris, which both get 35 mpg.

The big draw at Ford is the 40 mpg Fiesta, with a starting sticker price around $13,000.

GM is touting the Cruise - a small sedan that should start selling in the U.S. before summer. It's already a big hit in China, Europe and India.

Auto-makers are hoping these economical cars will not only draw potential buyers to the show, But also get them into the showrooms to buy.
