Search for drug store thieves

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. - January 29, 2010

Investigators say the same faces keep popping up on surveillance photo after security photo.

Authorities say this group of thieves, comprised mostly of women, is responsible for a string of robberies at chain pharmacy stores from as far north as Nesquehoning, Monroe County all the way down to Quakertown in Bucks County.

And these robbers have expensive tastes.

"They're taking Avon product, like face revitalize, it's like $50 a bottle," Chief Sean Smith of the Nesquehoning Police said.

"Rogain, white strips, Advil, arthritis medicine, Prevacid, it seems a lot of the higher end stuff," Detective Sgt. Don Bender of the Quakertown Police said.

Investigators say at least 6 people are involved in this crime spree that started just a few weeks ago.

And so far the only arrest came when police caught up with Maurice Taylor of Northern New Jersey allegedly seen on surveillance video robbing the Rite Aid in Quakertown.

But further arrests have proven difficult because during recent thefts, as the thieves exit the store, the alarm systems have not gone off.

Authorities now believe the bandits are using some kind of demagnetizing device to disable the security tags on the items stolen.

That has not only allowed them to make clean getaways, it has also allowed them to get-away with a lot of merchandise.

"Between attempts and what was stolen, it's probably close to $12,000 and that was just one day; I know these people have been linked to thefts over many, many days, months, and weeks," Bender said.
