Parenting Perspective: A Night at the Arden

February 1, 2010

I love the Arden. The acting is superb and the way they stage and interpret the productions really allows the kids to use their imagination. We decided at the last minute to leave our 2-year-old with a babysitter, but I did see other little ones there!

My daughter, Jennifer, is sometimes a bit shy. At the end of the production, they always ask if anyone has any questions. I was so excited to see her raise her hand! They didn't call on her, but fortunately, all the actors stand in the lobby to answer any questions the kids have. Jen got to ask why Peter Pan flies and how come she can't fly! I love that the actors are so accessible; I think it was a real confidence booster for my daughter.

We're always hearing how theater boosts kids self esteem and public speaking abilities. I've read studies like the "Children's Voices" which say that kids who are exposed to the theater improve their literacy and social skills. They learn to think critically about what they saw and articulate their ideas and feelings. Researchers also say the kids felt more confidant to re-enact the performances for fellow students.

It's great that the Arden has a program called "Arden for All". They raise money to give children in Philadelphia, Camden and Ridley Park free tickets so kids with all backgrounds and opportunities can get the chance to experience the theater. I know it made a difference for my girls!
