Police: Suspect backs car into 2 officers

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - February 3, 2010

It happened around 9:50 p.m. at 16th and Oxford streets.

Reports say police were following a car for reasons yet to be confirmed.

Police tell Action News the vehicle refused to stop.

Two officers stepped out of their patrol car to approach the vehicle.

This is when the suspect backed up the car, striking the two officers.

One officer fired back 10 shots hitting the suspect, according to authorities.

The suspect vehicle took off, hitting other cars as it fled down Oxford.

A suspect, shot in the leg, was apprehended on 25th and Arlington streets. He was rushed by medics to Temple University Hospital for treatment.

Both officers were transported to Temple University Hospital.

The officers are said to have non-life-threatening conditions. The status of the suspect is not known.

Police continue to investigate.
