What's the Spare Spike and does it work?

"We've been specializing in products to prevent slips and falls outdoors in winter conditions for about 30 years," Jonathan Bell, CEO of Horsham based Jordan David said.

Jordan David supplies the Philadelphia postal workers with a product to protect them in the ice and decided to come up with a version for the everyday consumer, to protect you from falls when you're out exercising in the winter, walking the dog or shoveling the snow.

Just this year they developed the "Spare Spike".

"What it is is a stretchy rubber device; it goes on over top of your shoe," Bell said.

So wearing 3 inch spike heels, no matter how fabulous they are, is not a good idea on the ice, so we put the Spare Spike to the test.

They're lightweight and slip easily over any type of shoe in about 30 seconds. The bottom has treads on it and 8 tiny spikes which are suppose to dig into the snow and ice and give traction. They're small enough to fold up and stick in your pocket or book bag.

For my high heels they worked, but on Jonathan's flat shoes they seemed to work even better.

He didn't need to walk as gingerly as I did in my spiked heels.

The Spare Spike cost $25 and are available on http://www.winterwalking.com/.
