Emergency rooms pick up after the snowstorm

PHILADELPHIA, PA.; February 11, 2010

It's a scenario being played out around the Delaware and Lehigh Valleys.

"I actually dug my car out and then decided the streets were too icy to drive so I was on my way walking to the subway," says Alena Appelbaum.

And that's when she slipped and fell - right on her tailbone. The pain was so bad she had to come to the emergency room at Jefferson University Hospital.

Doctors here say now that the storm has passed, more people are venturing out and getting hurt while trying to navigate icy walkways.

Dr. Kevin Takakuwa, of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, notes, "We've seen a shoulder dislocation so far, we've seen a lot of people fall and hit their buttocks, arms, legs and all extremities."

They've also seen their fair share of heart problems due to shovelling snow.

"Anyone who has a heart problem or lung problem absolutely needs to be careful about how much they exert themselves," says the doctor.

"Thank you," says Alena, as she finished her visit.

She got some pain medication and is planning on staying inside over the next few days with her sister.

"She's going to take care of me," Alena says with a smile.
