Plows make way to save baby

PENNDEL, Pa. - February 11, 2010

Brenda Kieffer is more than happy to hear her grandson, 6-week-old Damian, cry after a harrowing night.

It began when Damian's mother, 16-year-old Joy, took a trip to the kitchen Wednesday night with her baby in her arms.

"The lights went out last night, and I went to the kitchen to flip the switch," Joy said. "I had one hand on him, and he moved. He squirms a lot, and he slipped out of my hands and hit the floor. I freaked."

Brenda, in her bedroom, heard her daughter's desperation and soon saw a massive bump on the baby's head.

After a frantic call to 911, Damian was rushed to Saint Mary Medical Center in Bucks County. But it was quickly determined Damian's injuries needed further attention at Saint Christopher's in Philadelphia.

This is when paramedic Bill Finegan got the call to come quickly.

"We got stuck in a snow drift on our way to the hospital, and I recognized with the deteriorating weather conditions that it was not going to be easy at all to get this child down to St. Chris," Finegan said.

Once he was free, Bill made a drastic decision: The only way to get there would be with plows to cut them path through the snow.

First, crews from Newtown arrived, followed by workers from PennDot. It was a parade of plows clearing the way.

"It's kind of intense because I have children, I have grandchildren, and the worst thing you want is something to happen to your children. You want to get them to the hospital, make sure they're OK," Tony Pellot of PennDOT said.

The trip took an hour and a half from start to finish. Every minute increased the odds Damian would take a turn for the worse, but Bill's quick thinking, and their quick driving, proved Damian's saving grace.

"My little guy is wonderful, and I'm so happy he's OK," Brenda said.

Damian suffered a fractured skull. However, because he is so young, and his skull is soft, doctors say he'll heal quickly.

Brenda and Joy want to say thank you to the paramedics and the plows drivers.

And they say Damian does, too.
