Getting the right flowers for your Valentine

February 12, 2010

The good news: your local florist has a good supply, and it's not too late to order.

Many holidays might be associated with flowers, but none so much as Valentine's Day. Experts say Americans will give some 220-million roses this week.

Most retailers from here to Virginia will be selling blooms from Delaware Valley Wholesale Florist in South Jersey.

You probably know that the color of flowers sends a message. Red means, "I love you." Yellow means "friendship". So be sure your flowers say what you mean.

Flowers cost more this week because growers have been adjusting crops since December to get the harvest they'll need. If you can't afford the traditional dozen long stem red roses, shorter blooms may do the trick.

Or consider an arrangement, perhaps with roses added in. If your loved one follows the florist's directions, whatever you send should keep for a week to 10 days.

With Valentine's Day on Sunday this year, florists hope you'll order early to beat the weekend rush.
