Christine Gianacaci, a native of Hopewell, N.J., was a 22-year-old sophomore at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla.
The university announced Thursday that the U.S. Department of State has notified her family of her death.
"We are devastated to have lost Christine - a young woman who was a bright light in the life of her family, her friends, classmates and teachers," Lynn President Kevin Ross said in a statement.
The school said her family would not speak to reporters about the death.
Gianacaci was one of a dozen students and two faculty members from the university who were in Haiti on a service trip when the earthquake struck Jan. 12. Eight students were evacuated.
She was the second student to be declared dead. Two other students and both faculty members are unaccounted for.
University officials hired contractors in Haiti to try to find the missing students after the quake struck.
It was believed that Gianacaci was in her room at the Hotel Montana, a place frequented by foreign aid workers and diplomats. A friend said she spoke with her parents just before the quake.
And her last Facebook update was full of optimism about her time in the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation: "Saving the world in Haiti," it said.
