Mail carriers make the rounds through snow

LEVITTOWN, Pa. - February 12, 2010

It has been treacherous lately, as you can imagine. Still, the intrepid carriers are finding a way.

Joe Hogan has been delivering mail in the Thornridge section of Levittown, Pa. for 30 years. He says he has never had a harder time than this week making his way through 2 feet of snow.

"It was deep. It's like you're a human snowplow just chugging along and hope you can finish the round," Hogan said.

Joe is one of about a hundred carriers in Levittown and Fairless Hills who all made it to work in the blizzard and still got the mail out under abominable conditions.

"We saw it flashed all over the television that there was no mail delivery in a lot of the areas. But here? Our mailman came through!" said Debra Boltersdorf of Levittown.

Letter carriers are dealing not just with snow, but the threat of ice and snow falling from the trees and slippery sidewalks. Even staying upright can be a challenge.

"In 1995 or 1996 when we had that ice storm I took a couple of falls that year," said Levittown Postmaster Jim Knowles.

"Postal officials are asking anyone who hasn't already to shovel a path to their mailbox.

"I see them trudging through the snow and all the places that isn't cleared. I wanted to make sure at least mine is for them," said Skip Devine of Levittown.

So as Joe Hogan winds up a week that brought the worst working conditions he's ever faced, this veteran letter carrier sums up all the snow this way:

"Oh it was pretty, but it wasn't nice to work in!"
