Train catches fire in Bucks County

FALLS TOWNSHIP, Pa. - February 13, 2010

It happened around 530 p.m. on a NJ Transit ACES train that was heading to New York from Atlantic City.

62 passengers and five crewmembers were aboard the NJ Transit train when the locomotive caught fire outside Morrisville.

Flames were shooting out of the engine's exhaust and the heat of the fire brought down the overhead power lines.

Firefighters faced a dangerous situation when they got here.

"We couldn't do anything because the lines were still energized, so we had to wait for all the electric lines to be shut off…in the meantime, the fire, actually, self-extinguished," Falls Township fire marshal Rich Dippolito said.

Before the fire went out, passengers say it was a terrifying sight.

"We all just jumped out into the snow…and we looked up and, probably like 15 feet in the air, the flames were going," passenger Leif Savage of New York City said.

The train crew led passengers to safety across the snow to Pennsylvania Avenue.

The fire brought down 1400 feet of power lines.

Amtrak crews scrambled to make the repairs, but it's a big job.

All Amtrak service between Wilmington and Trenton was shut down for 2 hours, causing numerous schedule disruptions throughout the Northeast Corridor.

They were able to reopen tracks 3 and 4, but 1 and 2 remained shut down.

The train was New Jersey Transit's Aces service between New York and Atlantic City.

It's a 2 hour 40 minute trip that turned into a much longer ordeal for the passengers who eventually boarded buses to resume their trip to New York.

Two of the passengers were taken to the hospital complaining of breathing problems but they're said to be in good condition.

According to Amtrak, all lanes will be back up and running on Sunday evening.

ACES stands for Atlantic City Express Service.

ACES is a joint venture between Caesars Atlantic City, Caesars Atlantic City, Harrah's Resort Atlantic City and Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa. The ACES train runs between New York City and Altantic City. It was launched on February 6, 2009.

According to ACESTRAIN.com, NJ Transit operates the trains and Amtrak provides the ticketing and reservations system.
