Del. community faces $300,000 bill for new playground

NEWARK, Del. - February 14, 2010

For twenty years kids have been frolicking on the playground at the Forrest Oak Elementary School, even though it's long outworn it's wear.

The wooden structure is well worn, chains are rusted, tires are deflated, jungle gym pieces are missing and there's graffiti everywhere. Replacing all this is estimated to cost up to $300,000. But there's an even bigger problem.

"The school district does not pay for playgrounds," says Principal Diane Dambach. "So it is up to the school and the community to raise the money for a new playground."

That means the parents of these children are left to raise this money and apply for donations and grants.

When it came up to coming up with a new design for this playground, school officials put their thinking caps on because they went straight to the kids.

These 3rd graders drew pictures of what their playground should include.

Some of the suggestions included towers, bouncy houses, slides and swings.

Parents and these kids also hope public donations help with the cost of a new playground. You can get more information at the following link: http://web.me.com/bardales/ForestOak/Welcome_files/Brochure%201_1010.pdf.
