Snowy, icy streets still plague Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA - February 15, 2010

The 1500 block of Cleveland has a road block. It's a large manmade pile of snow.

According to Alira Taylor, who lives along the street, plow crews started making their way down the street, but just changed their mind and stopped.

"I said, 'That's OK, he'll be back.' No, he didn't come back," said Eugenia Reid.

It's been a week and many residents say they're prisoners in their own homes.

Seventy-four-year-old Eugenia Reid and other neighbors say they called the city's 311 center several times, but their cars remain stuck and more than 2 feet of snow remain.

While similar scenes are evident throughout the city of Philadelphia, it's a problem especially on small narrow side streets.

Overall, Mayor Michael Nutter and the city have received tempered praise for the Philadelphia's snow clearing efforts.

The region received a one-two punch unlike any the city on record that the Philadelphia area has experienced. Officials with the Streets Dept. have maintained that residents need to be patient. Workers are doing the best they can in a difficult situation.

Now, the AccuWeather forecast is calling for a few more inches of snow to add to the problems overnight Monday into Tuesday.

But after our story ran during Action News at Noon, crews cleared Cleveland Street. A small tractor got the job done.

A city crew member told Reid that low cable lines prevented the plows from coming through last week.
