Closing arguments underway in armored car killings

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - February 16, 2010 Defense attorney Karl Schwartz asked the jury to be fair "even to someone who wasn't fair" and spare Mustafa Ali a first-degree murder conviction.

Ali, 39, is accused of killing Joseph Allulo and William Widmaier as they serviced an ATM outside a bank at a busy Northeast Philadelphia mall. The two retired police officers were working as armored car guards at the time of the shooting. A third guard was also wounded.

Prosecutors say Ali planned to kill the guards and rob them.

They are expected to finish closing arguments Tuesday afternoon.

Ali, formerly Shawn Steele, served seven years in prison for robbing several banks in the early 1990s.
