Man sentenced in death of Pa. officer

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - February 16, 2010

Frank Budka Jr., of Levittown, was sentenced to 4 1/2 to 17 years in state prison Tuesday in the death of 37-year-old Middletown Township police officer Chris Jones.

Jones, a married father of three and a 10-year veteran of the force, was mowed down by his own cruiser during a traffic detail on January 29, 2009 after Budka's car slammed into Jones' patrol car.

Budka had marijuana, cocaine, metabolites, and methadone in his system when the crash happened, prosecutors said.

The DA says Budka was taking methadone for pain from a knee injury, but had been warned by a doctor not to mix it with other drugs because it would impair him.

Authorities say Budka ingested marijuana within hours of the crash.

Police also say an accident reconstruction estimates Budka was driving at 63 mph when he slammed into the officer's patrol car.
