Woman hurt in "cell phone crash" tells her story

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - February 17, 2010

It's not very difficult to find people behind the wheel using their cell phones and 23-year-old Jacy Good is on a mission to stop them.

"There's just no conversation important enough to take the lives of other people," Good said.

Jacy speaks from experience.

She had just graduated from Muhlenberg College in May 2008.

Her parents were taking her home to Lancaster County when their vehicle was involved in a horrific crash. The person responsible was using his cell phone. Jacy suffered severe head injuries and her parents were killed.

"This did not need to happen and it shouldn't ever happen to anyone else," Jacy said.

That's why Jacy, wearing a sign on her back reading "My handicaps are from a kid talking on his cell phone while driving," was on hand today in Allentown fully supporting a proposed citywide ban on cell phone use while driving.

Allentown officials say their bill mirrors Philadelphia's cell phone ban and the broader goal is to pressure lawmakers in Harrisburg to make this rule apply statewide.

"If the legislature isn't going to do its job in creating this type of law, we're going to do that on a local level," Mayor Ed Pawlowski (D) of Allentown said.

Meantime, Jacy says she still has years of surgery and rehab ahead of her, but her physical pain doesn't even approach the anguish of losing her mom and dad.

"They were too young and they are sorely missed in the community and I just hope they can live on in me and stay alive through this kind of action," Jacy said.

The Allentown bill is expected to be passed tonight and signed by the mayor. A similar, statewide version of the bill is being considered in Harrisburg, but, as of right now, in the Delaware Valley, only New Jersey has a statewide ban texting and talking on the cell phone without a hands-free device while driving.
