One dead after car hits gas pump in Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. - February 19, 2010

The accident was reported just after 2:30 p.m. Friday in the 1900 block of Admiral Wilson Boulevard.

The driver of the vehicle crashed into a gasoline pump, sparking an explosion.

Workers tried to use fire extinguishers to put out the flames, but the blaze was too intense.

Authorities say the automatic shut-off valve worked properly, detaching at ground level when the pump was sheared off, shutting off the flow of gasoline.

Camden Police and the fire marshal's office are investigating. There is no word yet on why the driver hit the gas pump.

The man who was killed has not been identified.

Westbound traffic on the Admiral Wilson Boulevard was shut down for about an hour after the crash.
