Potholes already a problem on area streets

PHILADELPHIA - February 22, 2010

One problem: Potholes. The record snow we've had so far is wreaking havoc on road surfaces. You know that already if you've hit a pothole while driving.

The cycle of snow and ice melting and refreezing is causing some giant potholes to open up on the roads.

"They're horrific. I figure by now I need a front-end alignment, my husband has had to put air in his tires. It's pretty bad," said Yvette Stoddard of Overbrook.

PennDOT crews have been out making emergency pothole repairs which, right now, means sweeping out the water and shoveling material into craters some several inches deep.

"Just trying to get material back in so nobody blows a tire out," said James Bieber of PennDOT.

Another concern for transportation crews are plugged storm drains. This could be problematic in heavy rain, and the Philadelphia Water Department would like a little help.

"We hope for everyone to remove the snow from the storm drains, the water department has been out there removing the snow from the drains as well," said John DiGiulio of the water department.

Higher weekend temperatures did a lot of melting and the gentle runoff has helped clear drains. However, Mother Nature has done little to help the pothole situation.

Crews have been filling the potholes with a temporary material. They can't make permanent patches until the weather improves closer to spring.
