Still no identity of abandoned girl in Del.

NEWARK, Del. - February 23, 2010

Police say tip calls are still coming in but nothing has led to the girl's identity yet. Meanwhile, a Division of Family Services spokesperson says they have already begun the process of terminating the parental rights. That process takes 6 months.

They have gotten calls from as far away as Kansas and Florida from people wanting to adopt the child and people have been coming to their offices in person.

Officials say the girl seems to be adjusting well in the foster home, but has still not said her name.

The discovery was made around 2:45 p.m. Sunday.

Richard Sedlak from western Pennsylvania is a power company lineman who was passing through on the way to a job in Maryland. He stopped, intending to use the bathroom at a Shell gas station at 804 South College Avenue, near the University of Delaware. He got a key from the attendant and headed to the door, but heard crying from inside.

"He waited a few minutes, thinking there was a parent and child inside," said Lt. Brian Henry of the Newark Police. "But when the crying continued and nothing else happened he opened the door and found the child inside, alone."

At this point, the child's identity and the identity of the person who left her in the bathroom are unknown. The crime scene unit worked into the night in hopes of finding some clue to her identity or that of a parent.

Police say the girl has been unable to tell them her name, but was crying and asking for her mommy. She has been placed in a state-approved foster home.

The child is a black female, appearing to be around 2 years old. Police say she appears to be in good health and well cared for.

When she was found, her hair was pulled up on top of her head. She was wearing a tan puffy winter coat over a size 3T purple shirt with small flower prints scattered on it. She had on size 3T blue jeans with a pink and white design stitched on the left leg.

She was also wearing pink, white, and purple sneakers with purple laces and white ankle socks. Her ears are pierced, but there were no earrings in her ears.

Anyone with information about the child is asked to call Newark Police at 302-366-7111.
