Man arrested for assaulting girlfriend's 2-year-old son

NEWARK, Del. - February 28, 2010

20-year-old Guillermo Rodriguez was captured last night with the help of a K-9 unit after a chase through a parking lot in Newark.

Rodriguez is accused of two attacks since January against his girlfriend's son.

Several days ago, his girlfriend and mother of the child allowed him back into the home even though he was wanted for the previous assault.

According to police, on Friday morning when the mother awoke, she found Rodriquez choking her son. After letting the child go, he fled the home leaving him seriously injured.

Officers found the child had suffered significant bruising to his eyes, bite marks to his arms and legs and severe bruising to his genitals.

The child was transported to the Christiana Hospital and later transferred to the A.I. Hospital for Children where he has been admitted. For the safety of the child, he has been placed with a family member by officials from the Division of Family Services.

In early January, detectives investigated an assault involving the victim and Rodriguez that occurred in the 100 block of Christiana Crossing in Newark. In the first case, he is accused of assaulting the child leaving him seriously bruised. Detectives signed arrest warrants for Rodriquez charging him with felony assault, however, he was able to elude capture.
