New Hampshire baby dies in NJ foster home

TOMS RIVER, N.J. - March 4, 2010

Calel Wheeler's parents say they learned of their son's death hours later when they went to court Tuesday to try to regain custody.

Carmen Cotting and Timothy Wheeler, both of Claremont, N.H., are blaming New Jersey's child welfare agency.

The Division of Youth and Family Services isn't commenting.

An autopsy determined the death was accidental.

Wheeler wants to know why his son was in a toddler bed and why weren't they notified when it first happened early Tuesday.

Cotting says her son and his 5-year-old brother were placed in DYFS custody on Nov. 2 after she faced charges with another New Hampshire man stemming from a bad check.

Wheeler was in a New Hampshire jail at the time.
