Aspiring journalists become 6abc reporters for a day

PHILADELPHIA - March 5, 2010

"It's been an eye-opening experience," said Sydni Grant, senior broadcast student. She hurried as she spoke, typing a script with twenty minutes until deadilne.

"There's a difference when you're in class and you have two weeks to write a report to being here when you have two hours," Grant said. "But I'm haiving fun . This is what I want to do."

Amanda Zavala, an Action News producer, had reported for Temple University's student news show during college, but said she wished she could have had the chance to learn in a boot camp program when she had been a student.

"Everything is just faster," she said. "You get a chance to hone your skills and you get to have fun; it's just on a different level."

The 14 students were split into teams of reporters, working the assisgnment desk, with additional newscast producers, a photographer and a web producer.

"Its about the station's commitment to reach out to the community and give educational resources to up-and-coming journalists," said John Morris, an executive producer. "The best classroom experience for a student is to get in a newsroom and to see what it's like."

Carla Carpenter, vice president of 6abc and Action News news director, had been planning the event for six months.
